"ROBERT SCOTT BRIERCLIFFE PARKER was born in 1901, and received his education at Trinity Academy, Edinburgh, and at the Leith Technical College.
He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. John Cran and Somerville, Ltd., shipbuilders, of Leith, from 1915 to 1922, in whose employment he continued as junior draughtsman for another year. From 1923 to 1940 he served at sea as marine engineer on vessels of the Currie Line, rising from third to first engineer and obtaining his First-class Board of Trade Certificate. He was next employed as engineer and draughtsman instructor to the Ministry of Labour at the Government Training Centre in Liverpool, and subsequently was made assistant chief instructor.
In 1943 he was commissioned in the R.N.R. with the rank of engineer lieutenant and was posted to Scapa Flow as an assistant base engineer officer. Later he was appointed engineer acceptance officer with the charge of trials of Diesel-engined tank landing craft. His final position, which dated from 1946, was that of leading draughtsman in the directorate of atomic energy at Risley, Lancs. Mr. Parker was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1948, and his death, on 1st January of the following year, occurred only a few months after his election."
