1935 Died. 'By the passing of Mr Hobert Waterston who died at his residence, Trearne, Helensburgh, on Tuesday, Coatbridge and Scotland lost a gentleman who was regarded as the "grand old man" of the iron and steel industry. The late Mr Waterston who was in 87th year, was a native of Beith and began his career as a pupil teacher. He was the first of the Waterstons to come to Coatbridge and he started to work in the office of the North British Iron Works, Ellis St. He was a man of wonderful initiative and rapidly rose to the very top of the tree in his profession and was Managing Director of the firm of Thomas Ellis, Ltd., North British Iron Works till 1912 at the time of the merger with the Scottish Iron and Steel Co., when he became one of the directors of the new concern. The late Mr Waterston wan a well-known and greatly respected figure in the iron and steel trades in Scotland and exceedingly popular with makers and consumers in England and Scotland. Mr Waterston was a Justice of the Peace and vice-chairman of the Coatbridge Gas Co.'[1]
