1834 Institute of British Architects founded.

1837 Awarded Royal Charter. Early work concerned with formulating rules for fees, practice and conduct.

Its purpose was expressed in the Charter (subsequently revised) as '… the general advancement of Civil Architecture, and for promoting and facilitating the acquirement of the knowledge of the various arts and sciences connected therewith…'

1865-7 Alexander Beresford Hope MP, not a member of the architectural profession, was President of the Institute.

1876 Charles Barry was elected President.

1919-21 Sir John William Simpson

1946 Lancelot Keay was President
