Note: This is a sub-section of Ruston, Proctor and Co.
Pride of Barum. No. 48359. Reg No. TA 2894.
- Overhead Valve Compound Roller.
- Built 1913.
- 5 nhp.
- 10 tons.
- Engine delivered new by rail to Umberleigh Station on New Years Day in 1914 to James Murch of Umberleigh.
- When it was 2 weeks old it went through the side of a bridge and fell onto its side into the river Torridge.
- It was used for scarifying, demolition jobs, such as Barnstaple Prison, and pulling down trees.
- In late 20's or 30's the engine was hit by a furniture removal lorry near Tavistock on the Princetown Road. The front forks were smashed and the headstock was cracked so the roller had to be pulled clear of the road by skidding it along on steel plates. It was jacked up onto a Foden lorry to be taken away for repairs.
- A rear roller was required during the second world war, but could not be obtained, so it was laid up.
- After the war, a rear roller was obtained and the tender was replaced.
- It was then leased to Barnstaple Council until the 70's when the driver Charlie Hanford retires. He refused to drive any other roller!
- Current owner is Robert Menear, Truro, Cornwall. [1]
