"SAMUEL ATHRON was born in 1896 and served his apprenticeship from 1912 to 1917 at the Pagefield Ironworks of Messrs. Walker Brothers, Wigan. At the same time he attended classes in mechanical engineering at the Wigan Mining and Technical College. After a brief appointment at the Whitehead Torpedo Works, Weymouth, he joined the Royal Navy as an Engineer Officer for watch-keeping duties. Later he was engaged by the Union Castle Line as marine engineer for duties in a similar capacity.
In 1920 he began a long association with Messrs. West's Gas Improvement Company, Ltd., of Manchester, which lasted to the end of his career. His first position was that of draughtsman, but in the following year he was made chief of the designs and estimates office. He received the appointment of technical representative and chief engineer for the firm's continental business in 1924, and held this latter position up to the time of his death, which occurred in an internment camp in Denmark on 15th January 1944.
Mr. Athron was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1931."
