1764 Josiah Wedgwood married a distant cousin, Sarah Wedgwood, who backed him financially with the large dowry she brought to the marriage.

They had 7 children, two of whom died young. Their daughter Susannah married Robert Waring Darwin; they were the parents of Charles Darwin. Their eldest surviving son, John was a partner in the business for some time. Their second surviving son Josiah had nine children and continued to run the family pottery business. Their youngest surviving son, Tom, was a pioneer of photography.
