MR. SIDNEY JAMES DAVIS managing director of Moccasin Shoemakers, Limited. Northampton. who began a 50 years association with the industry as an office boy, died at his home, Oaklands, Dallington, yesterday aged 73.

Although he had been unwell since the middle of August, Mr. Davis had managed, since just before Christmas, to get to his business for a few hours each day. He was at his office desk on Wednesday morning. Mr. Davis was well-known outside the industry. He was a former Northampton town councillor, treasurer of Northampton Sea Cadet Corps, and prominently connected with the savings movement.

It was as an office boy with J. Dawson and Sons. Ltd., that Mr. Davis started his career 55 years ago. Leaving Dawson’s, he entered the business founded by Mr. W. Barnes, and joined later by Mr. George Padmore. At the age 26 Mr. Davis became a director, and on the re-organisation of the firm in 1928 became managing director.

On the retirement of Mr. Padmore in 1932 he was appointed chairman and managing director. In 1934 Mr Davis was elected president of Northampton Town Boot Manufacturers’ Association, and was succeeded the following year by Mr. Dudley R. Church. Until about two years ago Mr. Davis was a member of the Regional Board for Industry. Mr. Davis was a wartime member of Northampton Town Council, and was defeated in the elections held in November, 1945. During his term of office he was deputy chairman of the Housing Committee.
