SIR SYDNEY HUTTON COOPER HUTCHINSON died at West Kensington, London, on the 10th June, 1929.
He was born in 1852, and was the third son of Dr. T. Cayley Hutchinson, deputy inspector-general of hospitals to the Indian Army.
He received his general education at St. James's Collegiate School, St. Heliers, Jersey, and at the Hartley Institute, Southampton, and was trained as an engineer under Sir William Preece.
He was appointed an assistant superintendent in the Indian Telegraph Department in 1871, becoming superintendent in the Bombay Circle in 1887 and being promoted to chief superintendent in 1901.
During the period 1888-97 he acted as meteorological reporter for Western India.
In 1901 he was awarded the newly instituted Kaiser-i-Hind Medal of the first class.
He took part in the delegation to the International Telegraph Conference in London, and in 1903, on his return to India, was appointed director of the construction branch of the Indian Telegraph Department, subsequently becoming director-general.
He received his knighthood in 1906, and his retirement from the service took place the following year.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1878.
