SYKES BENN was born at Huddersfield on 11th July 1849, and on completing his education he served his apprenticeship during the years 1864-1870 in the works and offices of Messrs. R. Armitage and Co., engineers, in his native town.

On completing his term he spent four years as draughtsman with Messrs. Robert Taylor and Sons, Engineers, Marsden; and then, in 1874, he became head draughtsman in the works of Messrs. Buckley and Taylor, of Oldham.

Four years later he was appointed to a similar post with Messrs. Woolstenhulme and Rye, of the same town, with whom he remained for nearly seven years.

In 1883 Mr. Benn went to Haslingden to take up the position of chief draughtsman in the engineering department of Messrs. S. S. Stott and Co., and four years later became Manager.

He remained with this firm for upwards of forty-two years, till the time of his death, which occurred on 9th November 1925.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1895.
