WE record with regret the death of Mr. Thomas Carter, of "Dene View," Heaton Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Mr. Carter, who was seventy-six, was particularly well known in engineering circles in the North-East.
He was born at Berwick-on-Tweed and was educated at George Watson's College and at the Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh. Subsequently, he continued his studies for a time in Germany.
Mr. Carter began his engineering career with J. H. Holmes and Co., Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne, and was in due course appointed chief engineer of that firm.
About twenty-five years ago he relinquished that appointment to join A. Reyrolle and Co., Ltd., Hebburn, with whom he was engaged as a consultant up till the time of his death.
Mr. Carter was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. This latter Institution he served for more than fifty years, having been a member of its council and chairman and honorary treasurer of the North-Eastern Centre.
In addition, Mr. Carter had served on several committees of BEAMA, the Electrical Research Association, and the British Standards Institution.
He was also a Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
