THOMAS EWART JONES whose death occurred in December 1951 at the age of sixty-five, was for thirty years superintending mechanical engineer to the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council.
He served an apprenticeship with Ruston Proctor, Ltd. (now Ruston and Hornsby), Lincoln, from 1903 to 1908, and concurrently attended classes at Lincoln Technical School.
He then served at sea as a marine engineer and obtained a first-class Board of Trade certificate.
In 1914 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a commissioned engineer officer, but was released in 1917 to rejoin Ruston and Hornsby as an inspector of aero-engines, being transferred later to the post of fitting shop foreman.
After a short engagement as inspector to Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby, he took up his final appointment in 1921 with the West Riding County Council. In this capacity he was in charge of the central repair depot at Wakefield and responsible for the maintenance of a large and varied assortment of vehicles and plant for the upkeep of the highways, with control of the staff.
Mr. Jones was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1929 and transferred to Membership in 1934.
