Thomas Jessop

Thomas Jessop (1804-1887)
Born 30 Jan 1804 in Blast Lane, Sheffield, son of William Jessop, founder of William Jessop and Sons and his wife Rebecca Taylor.
Apprenticed as an edge tool maker.[1]
c1830 Later reports state that William Jessop entered into business in Furnival Street with his sons, Montague, Sydney, Thomas and Henry in 1830, trading as William Jessop and Sons, and fairly quickly moved to Park Works, Blast Lane. The indications are that Thomas and his brothers learned the business working in the various departments of the company. William, Montague and Sydney then attended to the practical side of the business whilst Thomas and Henry looked after the commercial side. In about 1832 Thomas went to America and laid the foundations for what was to be a major market for the firm over very many years.[2]
William Jessop died in 1835. The firm continued with Thomas's mother, Rebecca, as a partner, presumably as executor for her husband's estate. Montague died in 1841 and Rebecca left the partnership in 1845.[3] Henry replaced Thomas in America in the 1830s (1834?) but died in 1849, leaving just Thomas and Sydney as partners.
1861 Thomas Jessop, Park Steel Works, Sheffield, elected a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.[4]. Of note is that one of his seconders was C William Siemens. He resigned his membership in 1876.[5]
1863-1864 Master of the Honourable Company of Cutlers of Hallamshire (Master Cutler).[6]
1863-1865 Mayor of Sheffield.[7]
1871 as a result of the death of his last surviving brother Thomas became sole partner in William Jessop and Sons.
1875 Thomas retired and sold William Jessop and Sons to a group of investors for £400,000. A limited company of the same name was created to own the business.[8]
1876 Thomas was invited onto the Board of Directors of William Jessop and Sons Limited to fill a vacancy created by the death of the Chairman H K Balstone and at the general meeting the following year was elected Chairman.[9]
1887 Thomas Jessop died on 30 Nov 1887 at his home, Endcliffe Grange, aged 83. He was succeeded as Chairman of William Jessop and Sons by his son William Jessop.
