1900 'Christening of an Engine at Bury. An interesting ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon in the form of the christening of a new engine which has been placed in the Two Brooks Bleachworks, Hawkshaw-lane, Tottington, belonging to Councillor Fred Whowell, bleacher, &c. At the invitation of Mr. Whowell, about 50 guests assembled to witness the usual formalities, which were gracefully performed by Mrs. Chas. Whowell, who gave the engine her own Christian name. The engine having been started by the engineer, it was stopped after a few minutes' run by Mrs. Whowell pressing an electric button. The engine, which is of the triple cylinder beam type, and is 400 indicated horse power, has been designed by Mr. J. H. Tattersall, of Preston, and built by Messrs.J. H. Petrie and Co., of Rochdale. The ceremony having been concluded, the guests sat down to luncheon, which was served in the boiler house, the room being tastefully decorated. Councillor Whowell presided, and submitted the customary loyal and patriotic toasts.'[1]
