WALTER TWEEDALE was chairman and managing director of Messrs. Tweedale and Smalley, makers of textile machinery, of Castleton, Lancashire. He received his technical education at the Accrington Mechanical Institute, and on the completion of a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Howard and Bullough, of Accrington, he continued in their employment as erector on behalf of the firm in America and Germany.
In 1891 he began his long association with Messrs. Tweedale and Smalley, which lasted for over half a century. After a period in the drawing office he was appointed works foreman and subsequently manager. He joined the board of directors in 1919, a position which he held jointly with that of consultant and adviser to the firm's manager.
Mr. Tweedale was born in 1866, and was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922. His death occurred at Rochdale on 11th December 1942.
