Walter Mace Macfarlane was born in 1877 and was educated at Atherstone Grammar School.
He served his apprenticeship with the Daimler Company, and in 1902 was appointed Superintending Engineer for the Brush Electrical Engineering Co. in Paris.
In 1904 he became Works Manager to Mr. J. S. Critchley, and later to the Motor Department of the Wilkinson Sword Company.
This was followed by five and a half years as Works Manager of the Adams Manufacturing Company, Bedford, and in 1914 he became Works Manager of the Motor Department of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd., for whom, on the outbreak of war, he organised their ammunition works at Alexandria, and managed it until 1918, for which he received the award of M.B.E.
From 1919 until his death on May 25th, 1922, he was Manager of the Stanhope Street Works of the Zenith Carburettor Co.
He was elected a Full Member of the Institution in 1907.
