W. J Hadfield was the city engineer and surveyor of the city of Sheffield. In 1899 he was appointed improvement surveyor, becoming the deputy city surveyor six years later.

  • 1908 - received the the additional appointment of surveyor of highways.
  • 1915 - became the city engineer and surveyor until his retirement in 1936.

He was a valued member of the Institution of Municipal and County Engineers, and was its President 1934-35. He was also a member of the Society of Engineers and the British Standards Institution.

He was an author of a standard text-book "Highways and their Maintenance."
