A swing bridge was constructed in 1882. The ironwork was constructed by Andrew Handyside and Co, the machinery by Brinjes and Goodwin. The contractor was T. Whettam. Engineer Ewing Matheson
Replaced by the present bascule bridge, which was officially opened on 4th July 1930. Engineer: H. W. Fitzsimons; General Contractor: Bolton and Lakin; Steelworks Contractor: Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co.
