"WILLIAM ALFRED CATHERWOOD had a long connection with the motor industry. He was born in 1880 and educated at the East London College and at King's College, London.
On the completion of a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. T. and W. Cole, Ltd., general engineers, he gained further experience with that firm as a tester, and subsequently was employed by the Simms Manufacturing Co in a similar capacity.
In 1903 he began a long connection with Messrs. H. Noble and Company, motor cycle engineers (later The Noble Engineering Company), London.
After acting as foreman of the engine shop for three years he was made works manager and eventually he became managing director with a half share in the business.
In 1931 he joined Messrs. Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., at Weybridge, for whom he was engaged in the aircraft tool making department until his retirement in 1945.
Mr. Catherwood, whose death occurred on 22nd June 1948, was elected a Graduate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1907 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1918."
