1861 Residing at the Globe Hotel, Exeter. William Birkett (age 38 born Lincoln), Hotel proprietor. With his wife Anna W. and son William H.[1]

1871 Residing at the Clarence Hotel, Exeter. William Birkett (age 49 born Thornton), Hotel keeper. With his wife and two sons.[2]

1889 September. Died. 'It is with much regret that we have to record the death of Mr. William Birkett, which took place at his residence, Higher Summerlands, yesterday morning. The deceased, who was widely known and respected in the city, wee at one time proprietor of the Globe Hotel, in the Cathedral-yard, and went from thence the Royal Clarence Hotel, on leaving which several year ago he retired from active business. Mr. Birkett never took any very prominent part in public affairs, though he sat as one of the representative of St. Mary Major's Ward in the Town Council from 1865 to 1871, in which year he decided to retire from public life, and his seat was taken by Mr. George Wippell.'[3]
