1920 Died. 'Mr William Carruthers Smith, formerly town councillor and magistrate at Nelson, and founder of a firm manufacturing confectioners, has died at Poole.'[6] 'News has reached Nelson of the suicide at Poole, near Bournemouth. of Mr. William Carruthers Smith, aged 65. Deceased, who resided in Wilderton-road, Branksome Park, was found dead in his bedroom on Sunday last with gun shot wound in the head. Mr. Smith, who left Nelson nearly 20 years ago, had been a Justice of the Peace for Nelson Borough, and was representative on the Nelson Town Council for Netherfield Ward from 1895-1901.'[7]
