"WILLIAM FAIRWEATHER ADAM served an apprenticeship with John Dalglish and Sons, Ltd., Avenue Iron Works, Pollokshaws, from 1894 to 1899, and in the meantime attended classes at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. He then gained experience with Bladen and Co, constructional engineers, and later was assistant to the works director of Alley and McLellan, Ltd., Glasgow. After this appointment he successively held the positions of assistant works manager to the British Electric Plant Co, Alloa; engineer and assistant general manager to Argyll Motors, Ltd.; and estimating engineer to the Appleby Crane and Transporter Company, Ltd., Glasgow.
In 1910 he was appointed resident engineer in France for A. Darracq and Company, Ltd., and subsequently became works manager of the firm's new works in London, with responsibility for 800 employees. This appointment was followed in 1914 by that of manager of the London works of F. W. Berwick and Company, Ltd.; subsequently he was, for a number of years, a director of Adam Grimaldi and Company, Ltd., Vauxhall. He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1918. For the last thirty years of his life Mr. Adam was in practice as a consulting mechanical and electrical engineer, specializing in automobiles and coachwork. He died on 25th September 1951 in his seventy-third year."
