William Frederick Cully, whose long association with this Institution began with his election as a Graduate in 1907, was born on 25th November 1885.

He was educated at the Council School, Forest Gate, and served his apprenticeship with Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., Fire Engineers, of Greenwich, from 1900 to 1906. He attended Goldsmiths' College in 1901-03, Regent Street Polytechnic in 1904-07, and West Ham Technical Institute in 1909-10.

After a year as a draughtsman with Merryweather and Sons, he joined J. Stone and Co., of Deptford, as a draughtsman from 1907 to 1911, and from then until 1913 as a Technical Assistant in the Electrical Department.

In 1913 he entered the service of the War Office and began his long career in Royal Ordnance Factories with his appointment to the post of Supervisor to the Chief Mechanical Engineer, Royal Ordnance Factories, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. From 1915 to 1924 he served first as Assistant Manager, then as Shop Manager, at Woolwich; from 1924 to 1928 he was Experimental Officer at the Signals Experimental Establishment; from 1928 to 1935 he was Technical Assistant to the Director of Ordnance Factories and then until 1937 Section Head in the Directorate of Industrial Planning.

He served from 1937 to 1940 as Superintendent of the Royal Ordnance Factory at Birtley, Co. Durham, and then for three years as Assistant Director of Ordnance Factories with the Ministry of Supply, returning in 1943 to the post of Superintendent of a Royal Ordnance Factory.

Mr. Cully transferred from Graduate to Associate Member in 1913 and to Member in 1927. He served on the Council as an Associate Member from 1922 to 1927 and as Chairman of the North Eastern Branch in 1944 and 1945.

His death occurred on 31st October 1958.
