WILLIAM GUTCHER was born at Aberdeen on 26th November 1859, and was educated at the St. Clement's Schools in that city.

His apprenticeship was served from 1874 to 1879 at the works of Messrs. Blaikie Brothers, engineers, of Aberdeen, and during the same period he attended technical classes in the evenings at the Mechanics' Institute.

On the completion of his apprenticeship he worked for two years as a journeyman engineer, and then in 1882 he was appointed superintendent engineer of the Singapore Oil Mills.

In 1900 he was promoted to be works manager, which position he held until his death. This took place very suddenly while at work, on 6th May 1912, in his fifty-third year.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1904; he was a Member of the Association of Engineers of Singapore, of which he had been President for five years.
