Henry Fearncombe and Co, japanners, of the Phoenix Works, Dudley Road, Wolverhampton.
Many firms of japanners had to find other work when japanning went into decline in the second half of the nineteenth century. Tinplate wares were an obvious recourse but many of them took to making brass and copperware, which seems to have had regained popularity as japanning declined. Henry Fearncombe produced brass and copperwares but presumably not on a large scale
1902 Orme, Evans and Co took over Henry Fearncombe. It is not known whether they retained and used the Phoenix works.
1924 An Orme Evans letterhead showed 3 trade marks: Orme Evans and Co; the phoenix mark of Henry Fearncombe and Co; and John Marston, Wolverhampton.
