WALTER HERBERT BEILBY was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne on 13th February 1880.
He was educated at the Cowley Schools at St. Helens, Lancashire, and the Durham College of Science.
In 1895 he began an apprenticeship as a mechanical and electrical engineer with Messrs. R. Evans and Co., Haydock Collieries, Lancashire, and on its termination in 1900 he was employed in erecting and testing high-speed engines and generators for Messrs. E. Scott and Mountain in Newcastle-on-Tyne and the Hill of Howth Electric Railway Co., Dublin.
In 1902 he had charge of the overhead construction and street lighting on Ilkeston electric tramways on behalf of Messrs. Dick, Kerr and Co., of London, for which firm he also superintended during 1903-1004 the construction of the Mandalay electric tramways.
On its completion he acted in the same capacity on the Singapore electric tramways, and in 1905 he superintended for Messrs. Dick, Kerr and Co. the erection of materials and plant for the Siamese tramways in Bangkok.
Subsequently he was employed by Messrs. Bruce, Peebles and Co., and acted as their representative in Shanghai.
His death took place on 4th July 1908, at the age of twenty-eight, during the voyage from Hong Kong to Singapore.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1907.
