Joseph Charles Costigan was born in 1871, and was apprenticed with Belliss and Morcom. He subsequently held appointments with J. Samuel White and Co of Cowes, and other well-known engineering firms, but came into prominence in the motor industry as Works Manager of Du Cros Mercedes, and Milnes-Daimler-Mercedes, in which position he remained for thirteen years.
In 1916 he was appointed General Manager of Gordon, Watney and Co, where he remained for several years, and then became Manager of Gray, Bovier Engines. For the past few years he had acted as Consulting Automobile Engineer. He died on 1st September, 1926, at the age of fifty-five.
