GEORGE WILLIAM MALCOLM, M.B.E., was a well-known figure in Cheshire industrial circles. He was managing director of the Salt Union and was also actively concerned with various other important companies.
He was born in 1870 and served his apprenticeship from 1888 to 1891 with Messrs. Gwynnes of Hammersmith and for a short period with the Pacific Steam Navigation Company and the Naval Armament Construction Company.
In 1892 he was appointed resident engineer of the Oriental Bank Estates Company of Mauritius (later the Anglo-Ceylon and General Estates Company). He became manager in 1898 of a branch works of the Forges et Fonderies de Maurice and in 1902 he was appointed general manager at the headquarters at Port Louis.
In 1908 he returned to England as chief engineer to the Salt Union and five years later was appointed managing director.
During the War he was superintendent of H.M. Magazine at Northwich, and was awarded the M.B.E. for his services. Mr. Malcolm's varied activities also included the chairmanship of the Joint Industrial Council for the Chemical Trade and other public bodies, and he also served on several technical committees.
He was elected an Associate Member in 1905 and transferred to Membership in 1907. He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
He died on 4th March 1933.
