1950 Obituary [1]

"ALFRED RISHWORTH TATTERSALL, whose death occurred in July 1949, at the advanced age of eighty-six, was the chairman and managing director of the milling firm at Towcester, Northants, which bears his name, and had been identified in the latter capacity with that concern and its predecessor, Messrs. Groom and Tattersall, Ltd., for close on fifty years.

After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Reynolds and Haslegrave, Wakefield, flour millers, from 1881 to 1885, he began his professional career as manager of Messrs. J. H. White and Company's mill at Belfast. This was followed by the post of representative for Messrs. Thomas Robinson and Son, Ltd., of Rochdale, and four years later he obtained a similar appointment with Messrs. E. R. and F. Turner, Ipswich, millers, with the additional duties of technical expert.

From 1896 he was managing director of the Newport (Monmouthshire) Milling Company until 1900, when he went into business on his own account as an engineer, and at the same time assumed office as managing director of Messrs. Groom and Tattersall, Ltd. He had also occupied the chair of the Unique Charcoal Company, Ltd., and of Messrs. Grain Cleaners, Ltd., both of London. Mr. Tattersall, who was the winner of the first prize in the technical milling examination set by the City and Guilds of London Institute, was the inventor of the "Midget Mill" and other machines. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1922."
