He was recognised as one of the greatest authorities in Great Britain on the electrical installations used in battery electric transport. He was educated at King Edward's High School, Birmingham, and at the Technical School in that city, where hr also served an apprenticeship with [[Belliss and Morcom]], electrical engineers, from 1903 to 1907, with which firm he continued for a further seven years.
