HENRY JAMES LEDGER was born in London in 1876 and received his technical education at Battersea Polytechnic.
He served his apprenticeship from 1891 to 1894 in the workshops of Messrs. Oxpring, ironfounders and general engineers, of Canning Town, and afterwards was engaged for six years as a journeyman on various contracts, including the installation of a large electrically driven refrigerating plant in 1900 for a brewery in Newport, Mon.
He then turned to refrigerating engineering and became engineer to Messrs. Slaters', Ltd., of Battersea, with responsibility for the refrigerating plant, which had a capacity of 100 tons per day.
In 1901 he was made chief engineer to Messrs. United Carlo Gatti, Stevenson and Slaters, Ltd. He carried out numerous extensions and improvements to the refrigerating plant, equipped the boilers with superheaters, and installed a new generating plant for electric light and power.
In 1916 he joined the Aeronautical Inspection Department of the Air Ministry, and remained with that department until his death, which occurred at Southend on Sea on 28th June 1936.
He was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1916.
