Hugh Iorys Hughes (1902-1977), a Welsh civil engineer

Hugh Iorys Hughes was one of the several leading UK engineers who worked on the top-secret Mulberry Harbour project in World War II in preparation for the allied D-Day landings on the French coast (Operation Overlord).


1902 April 16th. Born in Bangor, Wales, fourth child of Owen Rowland Hughes (1864-1952, draper) and Mary Catherine Hughes (b. 1869, same surname, no relation)

1920 Studied civil engineering at Sheffield University

1923 His first professional work was surveying for a bridge at Warrington

1924 Student of the Inst of Civil Engineers on the recommendation of his supervisor H. W. Fitzsimons

Worked on several other bridges, many involving pre-cast concrete

1925-8 Worked under Sir E. Owen Williams

1930 Resident engineer, Montrose Bridge. Became an Associate Member of the Inst of Civil Engineers

WWII Worked on development of Mulberry Harbour

1958-67 Designed and supervised construction of the southbound Blackwall Road Tunnel.
