Edward Watson Smyth (1883-1951), senior director of Taylor Brothers and Co

EDWARD WATSON SMYTH. C.B.E., who died on 14th December 1951 at the age of sixty-eight, was for twenty-eight years senior director of Taylor Brothers and Company, Ltd., Manchester, and had been associated with the steel industry during most of his career.
He was educated at Cheltenham College and Liverpool University. After serving an apprenticeship with Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd., from 1899 to 1905 he continued with the firm as assistant to the chief engineer, and later acted in the same capacity for the general manager.
In 1909 he took up an appointment as works manager to Joshua Buckton and Company, Ltd., Leeds, but six years later he relinquished this position and began his long association with Taylor Brothers and Company, Ltd.
In 1940 he was appointed principal assistant secretary in charge of the government training department, Ministry of Labour, where he rendered valuable services in an onerous and responsible post. He was appointed C.B.E. in 1946.
The rest of his life was spent as joint managing director of Robert Maginnis, Ltd., silica refractory makers, with which firm he had previously been connected for many years.
Mr. Watson Smyth was elected a Member of the Institution in 1942 having formerly been an Associate Member from 1909 to 1920.
