Frederick William Attock (c1875-1951)

1875 Born in Essex son of Frederick Attock, Superintendent of the Carriage and Wagon Department of the Great Eastern Railway and subsequently Superintendent of the Carriage and Wagon Department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, and his wife Ellen Elizabeth Attock.

1951 Obituary

"FREDERICK WILLIAM ATTOCK throughout his career was in the service of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, both during its independent existence and after its absorption into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

After receiving his education at private schools he entered, in 1893, the Knott Mill Ironworks of Messrs. Galloways, Ltd., Manchester, as a pupil. Three years later he began his service with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway as a fitter and successively became assistant foreman and foreman in the running sheds, and junior assistant in the outdoor locomotive department.

In 1912 he was promoted to be chief assistant in charge of the same department, with responsibility for the operation of some 1,500 engineers and the supervision of a staff numbering nearly 6,000, including 300 mechanics and assistants. He was subsequently made divisional locomotive running superintendent, a position he retained until his retirement in 1934. Mr. Attock was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1900 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1901 and to Membership in 1913. His death occurred in 1951 in his seventy-sixth year."
