1840 The brothers M'Onie formed a business, P. and W. McOnie. The name M'Onie (McOnie) went on to become closely associated with engineering in Glasgow.
1848 Mr. William M'Onie retired from the firm. Peter McOnie joined with James Buchanan Mirrlees, forming McOnie and Mirrlees.
1850 Mr. Peter M'Onie died; Mr Mirrlees appointed William Tait as manager
1852 Mr Tait became a partner, the title of the firm remaining the same.
1858 When William Tait became a partner in McOnie and Mirrlees, the name of the firm was changed to Mirrlees and Tait.
