1791 Designed the Low Moor Co's first blowing engine, made by 'Emmets Founderers' of Birkenshaw, near Bradford. This still existed (out of use) at the works in 1906. It was an atmospheric engine, with a 5 ft dia cylinder. The air cylinder was 8 ft 5 in bore. 1791 Smalley was engaged on a 10-year contract by Hird, Jarratt, Dawson and Hardy as Company Engineer, at £150 p.a. plus house and coals. On Smalley's recommendation, Thomas Woodcock was taken on to design and construct the two blast furnaces planned for Low Moor[1]
