Douglas Richard Chick, electrical engineer
1917 born in Hastings, Sussex, the son of an officer in the Indian army
Educated at various army garrison schools in the UK and abroad.
1932 Attended Dartford Technical College
1933 Sandwich course at Woolwich Polytechnic and a student apprenticeship with Johnson and Phillips Ltd.
1937 After graduating with a BSc (Eng) and a Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Chick began work as a Junior Scientific Officer at the Signals Experimental Establishment, Woolwich in research and development of military radio and radio jamming equipment.
He continued to attend Woolwich Polytechnic in his spare time, doing research on gas discharge tubes for an MSc.
WWII Joined the Ministry of Supply working at Bawdsey and Christchurch on radar and low flying aircraft defence equipment.
1941 promoted to Scientific Officer. He spent the rest of the war researching various aspects of radar including searchlight radar control
1946 Received a Wartime Inventor's Award, with W S Eastwood and A J H Oxford.
Filed several patent applications for work done during this period.
1946 Promoted to Senior Scientific Officer. Then he joined the Aldermaston Research Laboratory of Associated Electrical Industries Ltd, as Section Leader of the Nuclear Physics Section.
Later became Group Leader of the newly-formed Nuclear Sciences Group.
1951 Chick married
1952 Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers
