HUBERT LE GAY SOLLY, born on the 23rd April, 1856, died at Knor Hoek, Sir Lowry's Pass, Cape Colony, on the 1st December, 1912.
He went out to the Cape in 1877 and joined the staff of the Cape Government Railways, in which service he continued, with several intervals, due chiefly to ill-health, until 1904, when, for the same cause, he resigned and lived on his farm.
During his active career he was employed on the survey and construction of branches, as District Engineer on various sections of main line, and as Government representative on the inquiry into the Blaauw Krantz bridge disaster.
Mr. Solly was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 6th December, 1881.
