John Smalley helped finance Richard Arkwright with the development of the cotton spinning water frame.
In spring 1777 he established a spinning mill at Holywell, Flintshire.[1]. The remains can be seen as part of the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park and Museum.
He died at Holywell on 28 January 1782[2]
