1828 Leslie & Grindlay was established as agents and bankers to the British army and business community in India.
1839 Renamed Grindlay, Christian & Matthews
1843 Renamed as Grindlay & Co.
1854 Branch opened at Calcutta
1865 Branch opened at Bombay, Grindlay, Groom and Co
From 1908 these firms became branches and were thereafter administered directly from London.
Additional branches were opened at Simla (1912), Delhi (1923), Lahore (1924) and Peshawar (1926).
1924 The bank was acquired by National Provincial Bank Ltd but continued to operate as a separate private limited company under the title of Grindlay & Co Ltd.
1947 renamed Grindlays Bank Ltd.
1947 report: 'Offices in India were originally established in Calcutta in 1854 and in Bombay in 1865 under the name of Grindlay, Groom and Co. In 1924 the business was taken over by the National Provincial Bank, Ltd., who now own it, though they have allowed it to maintain its separate identity and to continue under the old name.'[1]
