1842 the Manchester Association for the Prevention of Smoke was established.

1890 the Leeds Smoke Abatement Committee was formed

1899 Formation of the Coal Smoke Abatement Society in London; Sir William B. Richmond was the first president[1]

By 1929 national organisations had been set up, notably the National Smoke Abatement Society

1930 Dr H. A. Des Voeux was president of the National Smoke Abatement Society[2]. The Society's annual meeting was held in Leicester[3]
