ABC Television was a commercial television station. It was the last to be formed immediately after commercial television was allowed in the UK. It was the smallest of the original "big four" contractors, alongside Associated Rediffusion, ATV, and Granada.
1955 The Independent Television Authority invited Associated British Picture Corporation to apply for the weekend commercial television contract in the North of England and the Midlands. ABCP formed Associated British Cinemas (Television) Ltd[1]as a subsidiary, abbreviated to ABC Television with Howard Thomas as managing director.
1956 The station went on the air in February.
1967 The Independent Television Authority decided not to reappoint Rediffusion Television to the London ITV contract. Instead ITA enforced a merger with rival company ABC Television to form Thames Television.
