George Newton and Thomas Chambers formed Newton, Chambers and Co, which started out as an iron works but later expanded into coal and ironstone mining and the chemical byproducts of coal.[1]
1857 Patent application by Edmund Edwards and Edward Beacher, of the Thorncliffe and Chapeltown Iron Works, near Sheffield, have given, the like notice in respect of the invention of "improvements in machinery or apparatus for washing or cleansing mineral and other substances."[2]
