WILLIAM HENRY SHOEBOTTOM was born in 1891, and obtained his technical instruction at the Northampton Polytechnic, London. After serving his apprenticeship from 1906 to 1909 with [[Lockerbie and Wilkinson|Messrs. Lockerbie and Wilkinson, Ltd]]., engineers, of Tipton, Staffordshire, he held appointments as assistant engineer to the [[London General Omnibus Co]] and the [[Northern General Transport Co|Northern General Transport Company, Ltd]]., of Chester-le-Street, County Durham. In 1914 he joined H.M. Forces and served with the Royal Artillery in France with the rank of lieutenant. On demobilization in 1919 he found employment as assistant engineer at the Imber Court Engineering Works, Thames Ditton, and two years later he joined the [[Victaulic Co|Victaulic Company, Ltd]]., hydraulic engineers, as first assistant to the chief engineer. Subsequently he was appointed sales manager and a year later chief engineer in addition. After six years as managing director of [[George Robinson and Sons|Messrs.
