The hotel opened on 1 February 1879, with 100 rooms and a further 60 unfinished at the time of opening.

1890-91, the majority of the interior of the hotel was reconstructed, decorated and furnished

1893–95, extensive additions were made with the construction of a new block fronting Barwick Street.

1972 Taken over by Hickmet Hotels

1977 Taken over by Grand Metropolitan Hotels
