Educated at Greenock
1869-1874 Apprenticed at Robert Steele and Co's Shaws Water Foundry
Then went to Henly's Telegraph Works at North Woolwich
Then worked at Henry Tate and Sons, sugar refinery, Liverpool
c.10 years at sea, as Chief Engineer for some years
Helped with the fitting out of the machinery on the SS Alaska for Guion and Co and subsequently sailed on her as Chief Engineer
1886 At Leeds Forge Co as mechanical engineer where he supervised installation of their hydraulic plant
1887 Joined Richardsons
1895 Member of I Mech E; outside engineer at Richardsons
1916 Resigned from I Mech E
