JOHN SAMUEL MARSLAND was born at Sale, near Manchester, on 23rd May 1862, and was educated at the Blackburn Grammar School.
From 1878 to 1882 he served his apprenticeship in the works of Messrs. Laidlaw, Sons and Caine, Glasgow, and remained two years longer in their employ as draughtsman.
In 1884 he became outside superintendent for the firm of Messrs. R. Dempster and Sons, Rosemount Ironworks, Elland, and two years later he was promoted to be works manager.
In this capacity he went to Leeds to Messrs. Clayton, Son and Co., where he remained two years, and then became general manager to Messrs. Jonas Drake and Son, gas engineers and ironfounders, Ovenden, Halifax.
A few years later he was admitted as partner, and on the conversion of the firm into a company, he was appointed managing director.
His death took place suddenly at his residence in Halifax, on 17th October 1907, at the age of forty-five.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1899.
