At the age of sixteen he went to Wednesbury, and served an apprenticeship of five years with Messrs. James Russell and Sons. After passing through every department, he rose to be works manager, a post which he held from 1870 to the time of his death. | |||
He was well known among the manufacturers and trade representatives, not only throughout the country but on the continent as well; and he may be said to have grown up with Messrs. Russell and Sons' Crown Tube Works. | |||
His death took place at his residence at Wednesbury, from suppressed gout, after an illness of ten days, on 24th February 1900, at the age of fifty-nine. | |||

JOHN CLARKE JOHNSON was born at Wheelock, Cheshire, on 19th December 1840.
At the age of sixteen he went to Wednesbury, and served an apprenticeship of five years with Messrs. James Russell and Sons. After passing through every department, he rose to be works manager, a post which he held from 1870 to the time of his death.
He was well known among the manufacturers and trade representatives, not only throughout the country but on the continent as well; and he may be said to have grown up with Messrs. Russell and Sons' Crown Tube Works.
His death took place at his residence at Wednesbury, from suppressed gout, after an illness of ten days, on 24th February 1900, at the age of fifty-nine.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1885.
