RUSSELL SINCLAIR, O.B.E., who had been a Member of the Institution since 1891 was Chairman of the Australian Advisory Committee of the Institution.
He was born in Scotland in 1862 and was trained at the works of Messrs. Muir and Houston of Glasgow, and later with the Wallsend Slipway Engineering Company.
He sailed as a marine engineer, chiefly in the China trade, and went to Australia in 1888. Shortly afterwards he entered into partnership with the late Mr. John Wildridge in a consulting engineering practice. His work was largely associated with the sea, but with the development of the meat export trade Mr. Sinclair's activities greatly increased and he took up the representation of Mr. T. B. Lightfoot's business in Australia.
He became associated with so many of the big refrigerating construction works in the Commonwealth that his career was largely the history of the development of the refrigerating industry in Australia.
During the War Mr. Sinclair came to this country on behalf of the Australian Government in order to acquaint his Government with the detail of munitions work in this country.
He died on 23rd September 1930.
He was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects and a foundation member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
