WILLIAM REBOTIER AVELINE, O.B.E., was born in Cumberland in 1867 and was educated at the Merchant Venturers' School, Bristol.
He was a pupil in the engineering shops of Messrs. G. K. Stothert and Co. of Bristol, and a draughtsman for three years with Messrs. Samuelson and Co. of Banbury.
In 1892 he went to India to take up a post at Bombay.
Two years later he entered the service of Messrs. M. Samuel and Co., the former managers of the Shell Transport and Trading Company and was engaged in the design and erection of their bulk oil installations in India, Egypt and South and East Africa. He was ultimately appointed Chief Engineer of the Asiatic Petroleum Co., Ltd., and held that position until his sudden death in London on 25th October 1926.
