ELIM HENRY D’AVIGDOR was born at Nice on the 9th of March, 1841, and was educated in France until the age of seventeen. His father was an Italian, the Count d’Avigdor, while his mother was the daughter of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, Bart.
The subject of this notice desired to enter the corps of Royal Engineers, but was disqualified by reason of short sight. He was therefore trained from 1859 to 1862 under Sir John Hawkshaw.
During that period he graduated with honours at the London University. His first post was that of Sub-Manager of the Iron and Shipbuilding works of Martin Samuelson and Co at Hull.
He was then for three years in British Burma, where he carried out some work for the Indian Government. Mr. d’Avigdor then took part in the Western China Survey Expedition of 1867, after which he was for two years Agent for Waring Brothers on the construction of the East Hungarian Railway.
He then acted for five years as Chief Agent on the construction of the Vienna Waterworks....[more]
